Mary Sturgis is a first-year Masters of Science in Foreign Service student at Georgetown University, where she focuses on cultural diplomacy, media and the press, and U.S. foreign policy in Spanish, French, and Portuguese-speaking countries. Her role as Communications Associate for The Lab allows her to apply her background in project management and communications to her passion for theater, politics, and intercultural understanding.
Mary fell in love with theater at a young age and studied musical theater throughout her life. As an undergraduate at Kenyon College, Mary was an active participant in the Department of Music, participating in several productions through the Opera and Musical Theater Workshop Program. In addition to pursuing her love for the performing arts, Mary traveled extensively throughout Latin America through her work with Amigos de las Américas, a non-profit that promotes intercultural understanding through youth leadership and international exchange programming. Mary’s work with Amigos brought her to Peru, Panama, Ecuador, and Nicaragua, where she developed a deep love for Latin America and a fascination for the social, political, and cultural forces that have shaped the region. After graduating with a B.A. in International Studies and Modern Languages in 2016, she moved to Argentina on a Fulbright Scholarship and stayed to work as a Project Manager for a communications firm in Buenos Aires until May of 2019.
Mary is thrilled to be joining the team this year and looks forward to collaborating with the diverse and multitalented Lab community!
