Samwel Japhet

Samwel Japhet is a Tanzanian choreographer, storyteller, and social entrepreneur based in Dar es Salaam. He found his voice through dance after a childhood marked by homelessness and abuse, an experience that continues to shape his return to the body as a site of memory and witness. He uses the body to reflect on social and political realities, blending movement, text, music, visual storytelling, and lived experience. His practice invites critical reflection on human relationships and societal dynamics. His work has been presented in festivals and theatres in over 30 countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. In 2021, he received the Seed Award of the Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development. He is a 2024–2026 Global Fellow with the Laboratory for Global Performance and Politics at Georgetown University. He is also a Salzburg Global Fellow and serves on the Salzburg Global Advisory Council on Culture and Arts. In 2015, he co-founded Nantea Dance Company to produce touring performances, social projects, and platforms that support emerging dancers in Tanzania and across East Africa. Samwel is particularly interested in building artistic relationships between Africa and the rest of the world. Through his practice, he explores how art can expand public understanding and inspire new possibilities for individuals and communities.
