Jasmin Cardenas is an award-winning bilingual storyteller, deviser, cultural worker, published writer, filmmaker, arts educator, and activist. Born to Colombian immigrants, Jasmin has always lived between worlds being told she’s not fully American in the U.S. and a gringa in South America. First in her family to graduate from college, she studied Theatre and began harnessing the power of art in action, working in communities caught at the intersection of poverty and violence. She studied Theatre of the Oppressed with founder Augusto Boal and was selected as the U.S. Emerging Artist for 2022 World Theater Day, recognizing her work using theater for social change. She continues opening lines of communication between communities of difference using devised theatre. She was awarded The Catalyst Initiative by The Center for Performance and Civic Practice to support her current work of devising theatre to fight for workers’ rights. Her group, WorkersTEATRO, has grown out of the need for working people to advocate for workplace safety and to advance Labor Policy. WorkersTEATRO was invited to share their techniques with working women in Mexico at the Intergenerational Dialogues for the Human Rights of Women Workers in Mexico, held in Mexico City in 2022. Jasmin continues to work as a Cultural Worker in her home city of Chicago, IL, as she juggles work, family, and a commitment to community care. Visit www.JasminCardenas.com
At a time characterized by polarization and distrust, the need for approaches that humanize others through narrative and empathy has never been greater. The Lab is dependent on outside funding in order to make our work possible.
